How to Grow Chickpeas

Planting Chickpeas:

  • To get a head start, sow chickpea seeds indoors in a peat or paper pot a few weeks before you can transplant outdoors.
  • You can transplant once the chickpeas reach 4-5 inches in height.
  • Choose a site with full sun and plant in loose, well drained soil.
  • Add aged compost to planting beds before planting.
  • Before planting, also add a little bit of potassium and phosphorous to the soil.
  • Sow chickpeas in the garden 2-3 weeks before the average last frost of spring.
  • Place each seed 1 1/2 to 2 inches deep and spaced 3-6 inches apart.
  • Thin successful plants to 6 inches apart.
  • Space rows 18-24 inches apart.

Chickpea Care:

  • Do not water deeply right after planting, but do make sure the soil is moist.
  • Once chickpea seeds have sprouted, go ahead and water regularly.
  • Add a layer of mulch once the weather warms up to keep the soil moist.

Growing Chickpeas in Containers:

Follow the same guide as above, but plant in containers that are 8 inches deep.

Chickpea Planting Companions:

Plant chickpeas alongside potatoes, cucumbers, corn, strawberries, and celery. Do not ever plant alongside garlic.
