Today we'll teach you how to grow spinach in a pot! This solution is perfect for anyone who may live in an apartment, doesn't have much yard space, or even moves around a lot! If you're renting a home for example, you may not want to plant your veggies in the yard, but rather in pots, that so when you do move, you can easily take them with you! Growing spinach in a pot is fairly simple, so anyone can do it!

Climate

Spinach prefers a cool-season crop, so it is best suited for USDA zones 5-10. If temperatures reach above 80 F, move the plant to a shadier spot. If you decide to plant in the summer especially, keep the plant away from the sun, as spinach doesn't do too well under heat!

Time to Harvest

Your spinach plant will take about 40 to 45 days to come to a full harvest. Pretty quick for such a delicious, healthy green!

Planting Your Spinach

  1. Choose a pot or container big enough to accommodate your spinach. The pots should be 6-12 inches across in soil amended with compost. This will help retain water!
  2. Add a fertilizer to your soil before planting. Choose something that contains plenty of nitrogen as spinach loves to feed!
  3. Sow seeds about one inch apart and leave them to germinate indoors for about 3 weeks. Keep the soil moist, and give it some sun as well!
  4. After 3 weeks, move your container outdoors.
  5. Once the spinach is 2 inches, trim it to 2-3 inches apart.
  6. For transplants, set them 6-8 inches apart and water well.

How to Care For Your Spinach in a Pot

  1. Be sure to water frequently, as anything that grows in a pot draws out a lot of moisture, so constantly check to make sure the soil is moist, and if not, water it.
  2. Spinach loves to eat a lot, so use a fertilizer that contains plenty of nitrogen or you can also use an organic fish emulsion or cottonseed meal.
  3. Feed your spinach by gently folding in the fertilizer with your hands. Careful so you don't go too deep – spinach has shallow, delicate roots!

So to Recap…

Plant your seeds in a pot with soil, compost, and fertilizer about once inch apart.

Move outside after 3 weeks.

Trim once it reaches 2 inches, so that the plants are 2-3 inches apart.

Water frequently, and feed as needed!

Happy Planting!
